Due to the lack of raw materials, domestic ethylene has been in short supply for a long time.

In 2005, although our country only imported 11 tons of ethylene, it was mainly because the boiling point of ethylene reached minus 103.7 degrees, making it difficult to transport directly.

What we import in large quantities are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, styrene, ethylene glycol and other downstream products that are easy to transport.

In 2005, the domestic ethylene production was 787.5 million tons, but the national ethylene equivalent consumption reached 1876 million tons that year, which means that more than half of the ethylene products we use are imported.

Comparing the two, the recovery rate of naphtha to produce ethylene is only over 30%, that is, to produce 100 million tons of ethylene, more than 300 million tons of naphtha is needed.

And naphtha is not a natural mineral, it is one of the products of petroleum refining.

The quality of crude oil in our country is poor, and the recovery rate of naphtha is only about 20%.

That is to say, if naphtha is used to make ethylene, and a project with an annual output of 100 million tons of ethylene needs to be built first, a national-level large-scale oil refining base of 1500 million tons will be built.

While using ethane as raw material to produce ethylene, the recovery rate can reach more than 75%.

A large-scale ethylene project with an annual output of 100 million tons only needs 130 million tons of ethane to meet the demand.

The process is complex and the industrial chain is long, which means that the longer the construction period, the more capital needs to be invested.

Currently, the most advanced naphtha-to-ethylene project in China is the 2005-ton ethylene project in Shanghai, which was put into operation in 90. This is a joint venture between Petrochemical Group and BP.

This is still relying on the excellent port facilities in Shanghai and the largest petrochemical industry group in the Yangtze River Delta in the country, which can directly provide them with raw material naphtha.

If the naphtha refining facilities are included, the construction cost may be in the tens of billions of dollars.

However, for an ethane-to-ethylene project of the same scale, the construction cost and construction period only need a little more than half of the naphtha-to-ethylene project.

Using ethane to produce ethylene, naphtha can be used more in the production of gasoline, kerosene, benzene, toluene, mixed xylene (PX) and other products, thereby reducing crude oil imports.

"I have to explain one thing. At present, our technology is not yet mature, and the price of ethane will be relatively high, which is much higher than the international market price calculated according to the exchange rate!" Yang Dongsheng said.

"Naturally!" Mr. Li said.

Mr. Li doesn't care much about the price. In the past year, the price of domestic polyethylene was basically more than 1 yuan per ton, and the supply of products was in short supply.

On average, 1.3 tons of ethane can produce 1 ton of ethylene, so they have a lot of room for negotiation.

This situation is very similar to the steel industry in the 90s.
